Hailing from Maui, Kemper spent a childhood looking up to the greatest Hawaiians from the generations before him. With no lack of motivation, Kemper is known as a hard-working young surfer ready to charge, especially in big waves. Kemper might be best known for his paddle-in exploits in huge Jaws, where he has already logged a lifetime of massive walls. His numerous XXL entries have included 2010 “Ride of the Year,” 2013 “Wipeout of the Year,” 2014 "Ride of the Year” and 2020 “Ride of the Year.” In 2015 Kemper won the World Surf League Big Wave Tour’s first-ever Pe’Ahi Challenge on his home island. He then won the competition three more times... Billy is a world-class athlete who sustained a potentially career-ending and life-threatening injury while surfing in Morocco earlier this year. The WSL is investing in creating a six-part limited docuseries on Billy's recovery and life, which will air in January 2021. Billy lost his brother to drugs at an early age and his mother to cancer in 2018, passing away right after he won his first World Championship. Through all of the pain, loss and hardship, Billy has persevered to become the male best big wave surfer in the world. This docuseries is a tribute to his dedication and it will cover not just his road back to the water, but also key moments during his life. With big wave legend Laird Hamilton as his coach, Billy plans to be back surfing Jaws (a big wave spot in Hawaii) this winter - only 7 months after his injury.
